Reigning Brier champion Matt Dunstone is back in victory lane.

Dunstone and his Winnipeg club captured their first tour title of the season at the Okotoks Classic in Okotoks, Alberta.

Facing three in the extra end, Dunstone drew to the four-foot circle to defeat Switzerland’s Team Marco Hösli 5-4 in Sunday's final.

It was also Dunstone's first title win with Mark Nichols at second. Nichols, who was the longtime third for legendary skip Brad Gushue, joined the team after E.J. Harnden stepped back from competitive curling at the end of last season. The lineup also includes third Colton Lott and lead Ryan Harnden.

Dunstone doubled up on Hösli 8-4 in the B-qualifiers of the triple knockout round to advance to the playoffs. His club eliminated Edmonton’s Team Evan Van Amsterdam 8-3 in the quarterfinals and Winnipeg’s Team Jordon McDonald 7-3 in the semifinals earlier Sunday.

Hösli rebounded with a 5-4 win over John Shuster of the United States to qualify through the last-chance C-side. The Swiss squad upended Saskatoon’s Team Mike McEwen 8-5 and Edmonton’s Team Brendan Bottcher 7-5 to reach the championship game.

Dunstone opened the scoring with a draw for a deuce in the second end. Philipp Hösli, who throws fourth on his brother's team, looked to score a multiple right back in the third but couldn't unlock Dunstone’s frozen stone and settled for a single.

Nevertheless, Team Hösli tied it up without the hammer in the fifth. Facing three, Dunstone hit and rolled too far to give up a steal.

After blanking for a third time, Dunstone’s patience paid off in the seventh with a cross-house hit to score another deuce and lead 4-2. It was a bit of a missed opportunity, as Dunstone's rock spun too far to count for a potential third point.

Philipp Hösli forced the extra end with a double takeout on his last rock of the eighth to score the tying two points.

The Okotoks Classic is part of the new GSOC Satellite Events series, with the winner guaranteed a spot in the GSOC Masters, Nov. 3-8, in Medicine Hat, Alberta.

The second Grand Slam of Curling event of the season features 16 teams in the men’s and women’s divisions: the top 12 teams from the world rankings as of Sept. 29, two sponsors' exemptions and two Satellite Events qualifiers.

Since Dunstone, who entered the week at No. 5 in the world rankings, will remain in the top 12 beyond Tuesday’s qualification cutoff date, the Grand Slam of Curling will invite the highest-finishing eligible team from the Okotoks Classic that is not ranked in the top 12.

The Autumn Gold Curling Classic, Oct. 8-11 in Okotoks, will qualify one women's team for the GSOC Masters, while the Saville U25 Challenge, Oct. 16-19 in Edmonton, will determine the final spots in both divisions.
