National: History

national

The first National event was held during 2001-02, the inaugural season of the Grand Slam of Curling series. Glenn Howard skipped his team to the championship in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., defeating Greg McAulay’s team in the final.

Team Howard was also runner-up the following year and captured its second National title in three seasons in 2004.

Kevin Martin came to dominate the event as the Ol’ Bear won three of four National events. The first one in late 2004 was particularly special for Martin as he became the first skip to complete a career Grand Slam (win all four majors).

Team Martin’s National title victory in 2007-08, with Brent Laing filling in at second, was their record fifth consecutive Grand Slam of Curling title.

Brad Gushue earned his first career Grand Slam title at the 2010 National defeating Randy Ferbey’s team 6-4 in the final.

The fourth time proved to be the charm for Stoughton, who was a three-time runner-up at the National before he captured the title in 2013 and also complete a career Grand Slam.

Team Jacobs fell in the 2014-15 National final in their hometown of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., to Team McEwen but completed the unfinished business when the event returned in 2016-17.

The National expanded to include a women’s division in 2015-16 and Team Homan was crowned the champions after beating Team Fleury in the final.

Team Mouat topped Team Kim for the men’s title in 2017-18 becoming the first Scottish men’s club to capture a title in the series. Bruce Mouat also made history becoming the youngest men’s skip to win a title in the series at age 23.

Mouat returned to the final the following season riding a six-game winning streak until losing to compatriots Team Paterson.
