Fry to take leave after controversy in Red Deer

The World Curling Tour has completed its investigation and settled on discipline following the incident at the Red Deer Curling Classic that saw the team of Jamie Koe, Ryan Fry, Chris Schille and DJ Kidby ejected from the event.

In a review of the facts, interviews with the club and tournament officials, submissions from fans and discussion with a number of the involved players, it was deemed that Jamie Koe was intoxicated to a degree where he was unable to play one of the games. Chris Schille and DJ Kidby were found to be involved in trying to keep the situation under control rather than causing an additional nuisance.

Ryan Fry’s behaviour, however, was the reason for the team’s dismissal from the event, both on the ice resulting in broken brooms, as well as actions in the clubhouse where his behaviour was deemed inappropriate leading to the team being asked to not return.

As a result of these actions, Fry will be issued a $1,000 fine, which will be directed to Red Deer Junior Curling.

In addition, Fry has chosen to take a step back from curling to get himself right and work through the issues that he acknowledges led to this poor decisions.

Statement from Ryan Fry on present curling decision:

“I have spent the last few days reflecting on what happened during the Red Deer Curling Classic. It has made me take a hard look in the mirror to understand what fuelled my unprofessional actions. I am committed to taking every step possible to ensure that this never happens again, and to make amends to those that I have negatively impacted.

“I will be making a donation to the Red Deer Curling Centre’s junior curling program as one of those steps. In addition, I will be giving back to my community with the hope that my story will help anyone dealing with similar issues.

“I would very much like to thank my family, Team Jacobs and everyone who has reached out to me during this incredibly hard time. Your support has meant the world to me.

“Due to recent events, I have decided to take a leave from Team Jacobs. As hard as this is, I will need to focus my full energy on my growth and self-improvement. I wish the team nothing but success while they compete in my absence. There is no confirmed time for my return, but I am extremely committed to doing everything possible to rebound.”
