Bernard retires from competitive curling

Cheryl Bernard announced her retirement from competitive curling on Tuesday.

Bernard plans to focus on her family and as well as her charity endeavours and public speaking engagements.

“To retire from the game I absolutely love is one of the toughest decisions of my life,” Bernard said in a press release. “But it’s time to be satisfied with what I have accomplished in the sport and walk away with some amazing memories and incredible relationships.

“I don’t think you ever really leave the game, I am sure I will stay involved in some capacity going forward.”

Bernard, from Grande Prairie, Alta., skipped Team Canada at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and won the silver medal with third Susan O’Connor, second Carolyn McRorie (Darbyshire) and lead Cori Morris (Bartel).

“Standing on the podium in Vancouver and winning a medal for Canada with three other outstanding women was the most incredible feeling — a dream come true for all of us,” Bernard said.

The Calgary native represented Alberta at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in 1992, 1996, 2007 and 2009 and won the Grand Slam of Curling’s Players’ Championship in 2010.
